About Speech Timer

So, who's this guy Kevin Moulton, and why is he giving away Speech Timer?

In an age of specialization, Kevin does a little bit of everything. His full-time career is as an information technology professional, and he manages Sales Consultants for Oracle. Kevin's specialty is Identity Management. His undergraduate degree, from Drew University, is in English Literature, and Kevin will occasionally tie together his technology and writing skills by blogging, writing documentation for software, designing web pages, or writing white papers.

Kevin also has a second, part-time career. Kevin's life-long passion is music, and he is a professional classical singer, although most people refer to him as an Irish Tenor. Kevin is also a cantor for St. Teresa of Avila in Summit, NJ.  Information about Kevin's music can be found on his web page, www.kevinmoulton.com.

Kevin's career requires the ability to speak, so Kevin joined Summit Toastmasters, New Jersey's second oldest Toastmasters club, in 2001. Kevin recently completed his Advanced Communicator Gold, and formerly served as the club's president and the Area Governor for Area 32 of District 83.

While music and computers may sound like very different interests, they complement each other well, and this is how Speech Timer came to be. Kevin developed a small program to time his songs in order to create concert sets. When Kevin joined Toastmasters, he thought the greatest challenge when preparing for his Ice Breaker speech was to learn to speak within the allotted 5 to 7 minutes. To help with this, Kevin used his simple timer program. Over time, this program evolved to meet the needs of practicing Toastmaster speeches. The eighth speech in the CTM manual requires a visual aid, so Kevin decided to "productize" Speech Timer, and demonstrate it in a speech. After this, it was only natural to put Speech Timer on the web and offer it to others. Offering Speech Timer for free is Kevin's way of showing his appreciation for the skills he has learned in Toastmasters, in keeping with the volunteer nature of Toastmasters.

Kevin's favorite role, however, is as a husband and father, and he lives with his lovely wife and two young children in Basking Ridge, NJ, where he can usually be found coaching baseball.
